Ceres and the Titius-Bode Hypothesis

The following essay is written with the information taught as fact by the Ron Paul Curriculum. Whether or not the information is true is debatable, but since is a school assignment, I will write the essay as such.

In space, even our longest or largest “earthly” measurements of distance are dwarfed. Such measurements of kilometers or miles become unwieldy. This called for a new unit of measurement.

Astronomers created the Astronomical Unit. One AU (Astronomical Unit) is the distance between the Sun and the Earth. Thus, there is .39 AU between the Sun and Mercury, .72 AU between the Sun and Venus, 1 AU between the Sun and the Earth, and 1.52 AU between the Sun and Mars. Astronomers noticed a trend. They called this trend was called the Titius-Bode Hypothesis which stated that the distance between the planets and the sun would approximately double with each planet.

…then suddenly, there is 5.2 AU between the Sun and Jupiter. This did not match the Titius-Bode Hypothesis. So Astronomers began searching for another planet: Planet X. This planet would fall in the space between Mars and Jupiter. Finally, after much searching, they came across an object orbiting in space. Astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi (the astronomer who first found the object), believing this object to be the missing planet, named it Ceres. The problem was resolved.

For a while, Ceres was considered a planet; however, as time went on, numerous more objects were found orbiting in the same plane. Astronomers soon realized that these were not planets, but rather, smaller groups of objects called asteroids. They then found that these asteroids are only a few of thousands of objects orbiting in the asteroid belt. Astronomers now realize that, although they found Ceres, the hypothesis that forced them to strive to find Ceres was, unfortunately, built on a faulty ideology.

The Sun | A Conventional Essay with a Biblical Opinion

“Of all the celestial objects with which we are acquainted, none make so strong and universal an impression upon our globe as does the Sun. He is that very light, ‘the greater light to rule the day,’ as stated in the first chapter of the book of Genesis; a vast and fiery orb, kindled by the Almighty on the morn of creation, to cheer the dark abyss, and to pour his radiance upon surrounding worlds. Compared with him, all the other solar bodies are of inconsiderable dimensions; and without him, they would be wrapped in the gloom of interminable night.”

We are often amazed by the complexity of our planet: Earth. However, it would be impossible to perceive this complexity without yet one more amazing planet: The Sun.

The Sun provides the necessary light and heat required for humans, animals, insects, and plants. It is exponentially larger than all the planets in our Solar system. Let me put the Sun into perspective for you:

  1. It would take 300,30,000 Earth sized objects to equal the mass of the Sun
  2. Our Solar system is approximately 99% composed of the Sun.
  3. The diameter of the sun is 864, 059 miles1

The Sun isn’t just big, as everyone knows, it is incredibly hot as well. At its core, the sun is 15 million degrees Celsius or 28 million degrees Fahrenheit! To protect us from this super-hot light, we are (Earth is) positioned 93 million miles away from the Sun.3Many are aware how fast sound and light can travel (known as the speed of sound and the speed of light); but believe it or not, if there was a sound that could travel the necessary distance from the Sun to the Earth, it would take at least 14 years, and Sunlight coming to Earth at a rate of 186,262 miles per second takes over eight minutes to reach us!1

You might say, “If the sun is just a swirling mass of hot flaming gas, what is the Sun made of? How does it burn being that there is not oxygen in space? And if it does burn, how come it doesn’t burn up?”

Well, the sun is 98% composed of Hydrogen and Helium. To answer the second two questions, it is important to understand that the sun doesn’t really “burn.” It creates its light from a process called Nuclear Fusion which happens when protons collide and release energy (in the form of light) in the process.2

Here is a super cool illustration/explanation of how the sun operates:

“As for its energy production, it is believed that the sunlight we see every day is made of units of radiant energy called photons which originate in the inferno of the Sun’s core. They may take many years slowly wandering up to the surface, then in a little more than eight minutes they speed across the 93,000,000 miles of space to the Earth, if they happen to be headed our way. Depending upon the wavelength or amount of energy a photon has, it may be absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere, reflected back into space, or it may zip down to the Earth’s surface to warm a flea or a blade of grass for an instant.”

You can see why the sun has to be so big for such a large consumption of photons every second (with such a small production rate) to be possible!

Important Note: The above information was from a view taught by the conventional educational facilities. It is not necessarily right. The following provides reason (for Bible believers) for doubt and question as to the validity of what we have been told.


Something that is important to remember is the sequence of creation as recorded in Genesis. Many may not realize that the first light God created (Genesis 1:3-5) was not the Sun. Actually, Genesis 1:16 shows that the creation of the Sun, Moon, and stars only happened on Day Four.

As you saw, I bolded “stars” for a reason. Genesis doesn’t say the Sun is a star, on the contrary, it says that the Moon (a light to rule the night) and the Sun (a light to rule the day) are lights – not planets or stars. This also implies that the moon does nor reflect the sun’s, but rather, gives its own light.

Here is my report on what I have learned thus far in my Astronomy course (by Daniel Dignan).

Definition of “Telescope:” far seeing

A Tiny Lecture

First, I want to explain why studying Astronomy and the Cosmos is important. Throughout history (even to this day), people have based their views on how life began as well as their opinions on theology on their understanding of the Cosmos. If we don’t understand why we are here or how life began, then what is our purpose in life?

Alright, here is a little bit of history to catch you up on how the telescope was made, the evolution of the telescope, and how problems were solved:

The Telescope

Galileo Galilei made a telescope that had a 3x magnification rate and then about two years later made another telescope 33x times the magnification rate

A telescope captures light using a primary (objective) lens which focuses the light into the telescope’s eye-piece which magnifies the image on your retina on your eye.

Light plays a huge role in our ability to see things. The reason that we can’t see far of objects like stars clearly is because the object doesn’t produce enough light.

Now, if your eye was bigger, then it would collect more light…which is exactly what a telescope does!

The first type of telescope was the refracting telescope which consisted of an objective lens, an eyepiece and a tube. The problem with this telescope (though it did work) was that the large objective lenses were hard to manufacture. The biggest and most annoying and problem was chromatic aberration, and the fact that, in an effort to fix Chromatic Aberration, they made their telescopes longer and longer, eventually resulting in ridicules lengths (hundreds of feet long!). So, what was this Chromatic Aberration? Chromatic aberration was when, due to the ineffectiveness of the lenses, you would have a rainbow/hallow effect above the object you were viewing.

The solution? Sir Isaac Newton and his reflecting telescope.

Newton deduced, from his observations, that it was absolutely impossible to fix Chromatic Aberration. This is why he created the reflecting telescope.

The reflecting telescope’s components consisted of:

1. A tube (obviously, as with the refracting telescopes)

2. A concave lens. This lens is curved. It appears as though hollowed out like a bowl. This was the first change that helped with the chromatic aberration.

3. Mirrors. These mirrors reflected the light coming off of the concave lens to the eyepiece (and thereby to the eye). The one problem with this type of telescope is that the mirrors are in the way of the oncoming light; thus, blocking at least 1% of the light from entering into the telescope. The best of these telescopes block only 1%. Most of them would block more.

As I said, the reflecting telescope was better than the current model of the refracting telescope. The problem with it was that the mirrors blocked small portions of light; slightly hindering the effectiveness of it.

Understandably, people were not completely content to be satisfied with some of their light getting blocked. Upon review of the problem of Chromatic Aberration, people found that it could be fixed with a mere tweak of the lenses. This “tweak” was called the Achromatic doublet. The Achromatic doublet used two convex lenses and one concave lens.

So, in the end, the problem of Chromatic Aberration was fixed and we had two effective telescopes.

The telescope was one of the subjects I studied this week. The next subject had to do with the Earth in general. I will start with addressing people’s ideas of how the Earth “operated.”


Currently, and for most of the modern world, people have believed that we live on a globe spinning through a vast universe which is constantly expanding. However, this was not always the case.

Back in the day, people believed that we lived on a flat plane. After all, we don’t feel the supposed powerful winds from our spinning globe, right? Contrary to current standard teaching, the Earth was the centre of the solar system and the sun, moon, and constellations revolved around them.

Similar to the fact that we don’t feel the incredibly powerful wind that would be caused by the supposed rotation of the Earth, Astronomers didn’t see something in the stars which (as was the belief at the time goes) should have proved the existence of a spinning globe; that something is called Stellar Parallax. This is the idea that as the Earth rotates, due to our different position and thus different view of the cosmos, the distance between stars and constellations changes. However, though Astronomers tried to measure a change, no change could be measured. Science today claims that Stellar Parallax can be measured and observed with special equipment. I, however, am not sold as to the validity of this.

Then came Nicholas Copernicus who published a book stating his beliefs that the Sun was in the centre of the universe and that all other planets, including the Earth, rotated around it. The Catholic Church did not endorse this idea as it was contrary to their doctrine that the Earth was in the centre of the universe.

Then along came Galileo with his telescope and the observations he made with it seemed, to him, to support the Heliocentric model. He observed how Venus’ moons orbited around it; deducing therefore that the not everything rotated around the Earth.

Then Johannes Kepler came out with his laws of planetary motion saying that planets moved in elliptical orbits instead of circular orbits (as was the common belief at the time). This belief that planets moved in ellipses did not seem to work as well with the geocentric model, so these observations were credited as proof for the Heliocentric model.

The last astronomer I will mention today is Sir Isaac Newton who presented the idea of gravity. This was pretty much the last straw for most people to give up on the geocentric model.

Present day

Currently the general populace believes in the Heliocentric model. There are, however, a large number of people who believe in a Geocentric model. The truth or falsehood of each is up to you, my readers, to research and decide about; the purpose of this essay was not to disprove either of them. It was merely to address the evolution of the views of Earth from the Heliocentric perspective.

That is what I have set out to do using the Bible as my inspiration and science to prove it to the unbeliever (or at least make an interesting point in an argument) I think we can use the evidence around us to prove God’s amazing creation.

First things first I am a ‘young earther’. What that means is I believe that the earth is only about 5000-6000 years old. As opposed to the atheists who believe in a 4.54 billion year old earth. Lesson 38 – Order of Layers for Proper Insulation AKA: SAR Clothing

How would you like to be an icicle? Not much you say? That’s too bad…you might get big bucks $$$!  

(I was joking…)

In any case, whether you are hiking, scuba diving, or playing football, you need to have the correct layers.

Today we will be talking about the insulation layers for cold environments. AKA: Protection against the natural elements. So for this method there are five layers. Each one can be taken off to make sure that you do not perspire too much and end up freezing yourself or giving you hypothermia.

Make sure that you have a head covering to prevent heat from escaping through that way. Also remember to have water proof boots if you will be in wet environments.

First comes the underneath layer. This is the layer closest to your skin. So for this layer you want a material that will wick away sweat and other moisture. It is advised not to have cotton for this layer, instead consider a synthetic material.

Then comes the wicking layer. This layer is similar to the first layer in that it can cover some surface area of your body, but this layers main purpose is to wick away moisture that your body may emit.

Next comes the clothing layer. This layer is just your normal clothing. The main requirement is that it is a little looser then the first two layers which are tighter around the body.

After the shell comes the insulation layer. For this layer you need warm fabrics. A very possible and advised option is to use some type of sheep wool material.

Last comes the shell layer. Obviously you don’t want to have something that is loosely woven for this layer. Quite the opposite actually. You want a material that repels water and keeps the heat in.

Lesson 36 – Incident Command System


This short essay will be on the Incident Command System.

Before I start, I want to point out that the picture above is the ICS basic organization chart.

Correct me if I am wrong, but my understanding of the ICS (It stands for Incident Command System) is the following:

The Incident Command System is a management system for disaster and SAR operations. It is flexible concerning where attention and recourses should be directed.  For instance, when there needs to be more people in one segment of the operation and less in another, they can be moved.

It is run by the incident commander who if the particular incident becomes larger and responsibilities start to become weightier, will pass down certain responsibilities to other people. Managers will also be added when new resources become needed.

The ICA is useful for organizing as well. Because when people’s lives are at stake, it is understandable that people would get stressed. That is not good. The ICA can help minimize the stress and maximize the outcome.

Lesson 34 – Three SAR Websites

Hi and welcome back!

So, today I am doing a bit of a summary on the following three organizations: National Ski Patrol, American Avalanche Association, and the Air Force Coordination Center. I will try not to be doing a direct copy of their sites!

National Ski Patrol

They have members in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. Working for these guys you might have to brave the cold (unless you’re the manager sitting in a cozy little office…with your coffee!)…and these guys operate as a non-profit organization! They are a leading authority of on-mountain safety.

American Avalanche Association

On their website, they have the following line: Keeping people safe in avalanche country through education, professional development, outreach and research. Which sums that up decently.

Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC)

Okay, so here is a bit of a summary of the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center’s responsibilities. Stated on the Air Force Rescue Coordination Centers website is that the Center is responsible for coordinating on-land federal SAR activities in the 48 contiguous United States, Mexico and Canada. The AFRCC operates all year round, all day long.

Lesson 10 – How I think I’ve Grown In The Last Week.

Hey guys! This essay is on how I think I have grown as far as my YouTube channel is concerned.

So, to start off, I will say the obvious: I now have a YouTube channel and I did not before. I still have not posted any videos yet, but I still have a YouTube channel! Next is that I understand a little bit better how YouTube works.

I was supposed to include some thoughts about my YouTube name, banner, icon, and about page.

So, my YouTube channel name is Music Moedim. “Moedim” is Hebrew, but in English it means something like: ‘The appointed times of music.’ Yes, it’s a little creative and a little less direct, however, it does say a little bit about my YouTube channel.

Next is my banner. So, I made my banner on Paint 3D. I just moved some of the instruments onto the screen and…there it was! It took a bit of figuring out, but I got it!

Next is my icon. My icon was also made on Paint 3D. It is just a piano. Not a ton to talk about there…except that it’s a Grand piano…and its black…Okay, maybe there is a few things to talk about!

Next is my about page. In there I basically said that my YouTube channel is dedicated to making music. OK, it’s more interesting than that!

I was also supposed to say how the things above (banner, icon, etc) support my Value Proposition (VP) and my target audience.

So, my Value Proposition is to provide satisfying musical content (I may or may not do music tutorials, time will tell), but that is basically what my about page says. My target audience is those who want to listen to music and be satisfied (or those who want to learn music). So, I would say that they agree with my about page.
